125k miles
Replaced Fuel Pump Feb 2006.

180k miles
Had to replace Fuel Pump again July 2007

Both times over $1000, second time 650 miles from home and had to spend weekend in Duluth waiting for service

:(

2003 Onyx Black Z71 - 145k miles and I have had it replace three (2 times and working on the third!)  I am currently looking for info to do it myself this time! :E: :needhug:

Hey, gang,
Will a slowly failing fuel pump cause a lean run condition? (Codes P0171 or P0174, or even th dreaded P0300?)

EJ

02 Z-71 died two blocks from my house and replaced at 68k, covered under extended warranty.

Now as for the running lean condition, absolutely.  It screwed the he** out of my system.  When all was done they ended up replacing the pump, cleaned and bored out the throttle body ( my mechanic), replaced the injectors and had to replace the new cats since the lean condition resulted in more fuel being pumped and clogged them.  When it was all done it ran like a raped ape.

pondfly,
Did you receive any SES lights, before the pump went?

My son's '97 S-10 Blazer, did the same thing. Quit all at once. But, we couldn't tell from any codes that a fuel pump failure was imminent.

Still original 2002 with 114k.

I also change the fuel filter every 25k and rarely let the fuel get below 1/4 tank.

2003. . . 105K miles. Cost $350ish for the new pump.

The pump did not go out all at once. It was intermittent over a 400 mile period. I thought I had bad gas <water> due to problems starting 10 miles after I topped off the tank. Swapped fuel filter and it ran good for the next 100 miles.

Changed filter again and idled truck for 2 hrs. in driveway with no apparent problem. Filter looked fine. Had "lean run" code on both banks.

Pump finally gave up for good a week later.

Just out of curiosity Ray, how often did you run the gas tank down to empty?

I have only let my fuel get down to the point where my low fuel light has come on only about 5 times in the 6+ yrs and 115K miles. It is my unproven theory that running the fuel down to less than 1/4 tank consistently contributes to fuel pump failure since the pump is using the fuel itself to keep the pump cool  ???

Thanks :D

No problem 2002 59,000 miles

02 Z71,
I've also heard about problems due to insufficient cooling of the pump. ?

I always fill up. ?. ?. ?. ?never just add a few gallons. ??But I do run it down till my low fuel light comes on about 1/2 the time before I fill up. ??So there may be something to it. ?

Ok thanks Ray!

Just a note to all.
I paid aroud $325 local for my new pump, and that price has also been posted in a couple other threads.

Somebody sent me an ebay link that had the pumps for $95 to $130.
Worth looking into if you can accept the delay for shipping.

LOL, I love it. Unless you run the tank dry the fuel pump is never exposed.

The pump is is in a bucket. fuel is drawn from the tank to the bucket before being pumped. The unused fuel is also dumped back in to the bucket from the return line.

Global from the above post has way fast shipping BTW.

02 Av 2500 with 150K - Pump repaired.

It would be really interesting to know how many of the people who had their fuel pumps REPLACED actually saw the damaged or failed pumps? I wonder how many pumps were replaced ($550.00 for pump plus labor) simply because the dealer did not have the correct fuel level sender/fuel pump power wire harness. I went to two different GM dealers and two autoparts stores and none of them had the wire harness! Both dealers suggested replacing the pump because "it's probably on its last leg anyway"! I'm all for taking preventative measures, but $1,000.00 is a bit much when the failure is a 10 to 30$ part.

Is everyone asking for their failed parts like good, concientious consumers?

Always ask for the failed part as well as the box the new one came in (if available). It could save you some aggravation later.

Was it an oxidized relay? I'd say most folks go with replacing the unit because they don't know (myself included) what to look for, specifically, in a fuel pump issue. Not to mention that it would be extremely difficult, if not, impossible to be so finicky as to demand a mechanic to make sure it is not a smaller part of the unit that is failing versus the entire unit. They'd probably charge you more in labor to check that than a new unit would have been worth.

I'm not saying that being a conscientious consumer is bad...quite the contrary. But I'd probably get laughed at pretty hard if I were to take my vehicle to a mechanic and state for him to be sure and check the fuel pump out thoroughly because it could be an oxidation somewhere or bad stator or a very inexpensive part of the fuel pump. Like I said, he might do that, but I'd have about 10-20 hrs of labor tacked on.

Me? I plan on making a panel under the driver side rear seat in my avalanche and purchasing a $100 fuel pump from Global on Ebay. They are completely identical to the Delco and a third of the price. So, for me, a 12 pack of beer, 30 minutes and $100 is all I'm gonna ever spend on a new fuel pump.

the 2 I have gotten from Global have been stamped DELCO...... for what its worth.

They are in friends trucks, doing better than mine from the dealer.

Now they have a rebuild kit with only the pump, filters, hoses fer $50. Happy fathers day presant to me.... never leave home without it!

2002 2500, 122,000 miles on original pump.

Trying to eliminate a trouble code, I just checked pump last week and had 49psi @ idle and 59 psi @ WOT. Right within specs.

Just don't let the fuel get low. The pump uses the fuel to cool itself.

If you run around with less than half a tank of gas yes you will have problems with the fuel pump

Kind of ......

I have an '02 Avalanche with 49K with no problems; however, I also have a '02 Suburban which just had the fuel pump die. Typical failure mode is cranking for 5 seconds before it starts or taking 2 cranking sessions to start. This is a huge problem with the suburban and I have many friends that have this issue. It is my understanding that they share many of the same systems including this one.

In that vein, is there some place on this forum or in the service manual that describes how to replace the fuel filter. I looked very quickly at the service manual (the 6 various books) and did not see anything instructions for this. Thanks in advance for any help.
