Was it an oxidized relay? I'd say most folks go with replacing the unit because they don't know (myself included) what to look for, specifically, in a fuel pump issue. Not to mention that it would be extremely difficult, if not, impossible to be so finicky as to demand a mechanic to make sure it is not a smaller part of the unit that is failing versus the entire unit. They'd probably charge you more in labor to check that than a new unit would have been worth.
I'm not saying that being a conscientious consumer is bad...quite the contrary. But I'd probably get laughed at pretty hard if I were to take my vehicle to a mechanic and state for him to be sure and check the fuel pump out thoroughly because it could be an oxidation somewhere or bad stator or a very inexpensive part of the fuel pump. Like I said, he might do that, but I'd have about 10-20 hrs of labor tacked on.
Me? I plan on making a panel under the driver side rear seat in my avalanche and purchasing a $100 fuel pump from Global on Ebay. They are completely identical to the Delco and a third of the price. So, for me, a 12 pack of beer, 30 minutes and $100 is all I'm gonna ever spend on a new fuel pump.
