So on Thursday I was traveling through the "S" Curves south bound on I-131 in Grand Rapids, MI....
80F and sunny about 4:30 pm. Stop and go traffic... Car in front of me panic stopped, I tried to stop and was successful until the lady behind me hit me hard from behind, then she was rear ended, and the car behind them was rear ended. My Truck ended up on top of the ladies car behind me with my H2 rear end and H2 springs giving me about a 3" or slightly higher lift. The Frame in the rear was bent at a 90 degree angle at the first cross member. Basically the frame folded at the front of the class 5 hitch I have on the truck.

The front was smashed a bit as well. Everyone walked away with no injuries other than probably whatever aches and pains they have the next day or two. I ended up with neck and back pain. After a visit to my Chiropractor yesterday I think I am back to where I was before the accident.

If my truck is totalled I will not be buying it back and will let it go. I am putting it back to "stock" for now as I get ready for the news. I expect the truck to get totalled with its rusted out rockers and 290k+ miles on the speedo. If that happens I likely will be leaving the site and not come back. I will monitor until I find my next truck in the fall though. I have seen what looks like a mint Avy 1500 for $8500, and I saw a 2500 that needs some work, saw a cracked frame at the rear wheel well so I doubt I would pick that one up. The fact I plan to get a 5th wheel eventually I expect I will be looking for a non-avy 2500 or higher and will likely not be looking for another avy.

I have been a part of this community for about 13 years, at times more active than others. Both support other members and been given great help when I have needed it. It will be a sad day if they do total the Avy and by the looks of the truck I will be surprised if they don't. I will be sorry to see it go, but it has served me very well and protected me well in the time of an accident.

Note when you look at these pictures, the rear is a 3/4 ton rear end with 8lugs and the front has adapters to give it 8 lugs as well. I may stay on here a little longer because I have some components left over that I will likely want to try to sell off but I don't see a point in buying back this truck if they do total it.

The biggest thing I have is this nice built Lq4 engine I was going to put into this truck. Not sure if I will hold onto it or try to sell it at this point. Just got it from the engine shop about a week ago. I have about $8k into the rebuild on this engine.

Here you can see the car I hit in front of me... And my truck still sitting on top of the car that hit me with wheels off the ground. Notice no body panel damage on the rear. The strangest part of this whole ordeal.

Here you can see the side of the car that hit me and the other 2 cars that ran into the back of her.
The two lighter colored vehicles were towed off on flat beds. both lost their radiators.

The jeep, the car in front of me and I all drove home. The tow truck used his winch to pull the fender forward so the inner fender stopped rubbing against my front tire. I drove about 45 miles home from that location. Truck pulled slightly to the right but ran and otherwise drove fine. Hoping not a tweaked frame past the obvious bent frame and that its just the front got knocked out of alignment.

Here is how the rear looked. The tailgate skin popped off when the tow truck was pulling me off the car that was holding me in the air. Since this H2 rear has 4.10 gears I had the front diff removed and had bought one with 4.10 gears. Was waiting to install it until I got the lift kit installed. Planned on Engine, lift kit, rims/tires, rust repair, 4l80e (Or 6l90e if possible) then blower upgrade. (Was going to have eaton M122 blower on the engine when installed. )

Side view from other side of the rear. You can see the rust damage. I have the cladding for both sides. Took it off before loosing it.

Front end damage. (Which is what will likely total it since the rear is an easy fix and the Adjuster told me the rear was not a problem since there didn't appear to be any other damage. )

Front end damage... Didn't let me put it in the other posting. The damage to the passenger side is only because the drivers side was pushed back. It did not actually contact the car in front of me. if you noticed in the last picture I was partially in the other lane from getting hit.

Well that really sucks but glad you all were able to leave with no major injury.

I will be shocked if they don't total it.

I feel you on your decision. Sometime life changes and you have to make the best decision that fits you at that time. Even if it's not the one you want it to be.

I hope there's a silver lining in all this for you. Best of luck!

PS:
That dude looking at his jeep is just as upset, I promise!

Ouch!! Definitely left a mark, glad you're okay..

Original plan was to put a bigger motor in it and use it to tow travel trailers now and eventually buy a 3/4 ton. I owe $5400 on it because I had to refinance it in 2021. Had the transmission go out on my car ($4000) and the whole fuel system was rotted out on my truck. I replaced everything from the engine quick connects to what went into the gas tank. Was like $700 in parts and another $800 in labor. Got just enough to fix both the truck and the car... Have had this truck since 2010 and the only accident I had prior to this is a tree falling partially on it in 2019. Had another one fall right behind it in 2018 so I had parked the truck next to the house but in 2019 a tree fell from the neighbors house and one of the branches landed right on the hood. Dented the fender too... Both trees were rotted out at the base from carpenter ants and were more than 24" around so I guess I got lucky twice before.

I expect them to total it out and pay off my loan, call it good. If they total it out and don't pay off my loan I can always sue the person behind me that hit me for the difference up to $1000. But other than the rocker rust the truck was a very solid truck.

Sorry to see that red. She was a beauty.
I need your back window! Love the sticker too
I just removed my back window this weekend for some fresh air. I seen it right away

Busted frame . Ice damage from this winter, Tried to pull it back together with a 6 ft clamp but no luck.
Still fits but its busted. Might be hard to find another

Looking at an '03 1500 that is "ready to go". With the cost of 2500 or bigger trucks I am seriously considering this local truck. It has 123k miles on the speedo and is in Decent shape. It is a red truck and has different features than my truck. My truck also has features that this one doesn't have so I could make one really nice truck from the two.

Issues I have found with this truck are the rockers are rusted but not showing yet. Probably about where my rockers were 4 years ago.

That and the Sunroof seal is all wavy so I suspect it would need to be removed and a new seal put on it.

Otherwise it is not a bad looking truck. Guy told me it had some rust they welded new pieces on for. They have it listed for $8500. With the rocker condition I might see if they can go down to $7000 assuming they total my truck and I buy it back.

There is also an 06 2500 a local place bought and plan to fix up. Not sure though because the frame looks to be pretty rusted. Cracked in one location that I saw and otherwise looks like the frame is pretty rotted out. Supposed to only have $89k miles on it but looks in worse condition than my truck with almost 300,000 miles on it. If someone has a 2500 they want to sell I might be interested...

And it wasn't your fault which makes it even worse. Glad it protected you and you walked away. Hoping for some kind of better outcome.
I recently had a family member in the same type of accident. Despite being 2 cars back and braking in, time they were ticketed for "following too closely". Sucks royally! Really hoping that's not the case for you!

Good luck with whatever happens, good thing you didn't get more pain or worse. Whiplash has a way of hiding for a while.

Thank you. I'm watching out for whiplash. Luckily, nothing yet. I'm hoping dearly the police report I made will result in something more than a couple sheets of paper and 14 pics on a computer.

I know whiplash can hide for days or even weeks.
When you say "diesel" do you mean pickup or semi (big rig)? I drive for a living and my pet road rage is against pickups, the absolute most discourteous azz-blasters on the roads. Especially the diesel drivers. I have issues with them almost every week, cutting me off, blowing smoke at me for no reason other than my bus doesn't go but 65mph (like that's my fault), brake checking me when it was them that moved in front of me. Road rage really should be legalized...

Well I ended up getting a 2005 white 2500. Still working through the kinks with it. Has 260k miles on it with a lifter tick in the 8.1.
Just driving it for now.

I have Meniers and the accident made it worse. I was able to control it with chiropractor visits but after the accident that was no longer the case. Now I found if I take a Diuretic it helps me. Lucky I can do most of the repairs myself but we shall see. Going to need to do some rust repair on this truck in the near future before the rockers get rusty.

I am in PA and here they do safety and emissions checks. Sucks. Truck is fine for michigan but the shops here dig around and try to find things to fix.

Sorry, this is long. Feel free to skip.
Luckily, the vehicle I would have hit if I tjfried to break when I swung over for it, were TWO Police trucks (NO LIGHTS ON) helping a slide off. The Semi Diesel with 53' empty flatbed would have been ticked for not accommodating my quick move over (within reason) for the police as is the law in Utah.
It was just after the hill & light that he sped up in the inside lane and cut over into my lane, forcing me on the shoulder and into 2 mile long line of construction barrels, especially over a bridge (I LOVE Cladding as it saved my 21 paint job). I laid 20240613_140733.jpgon the horn, but he cut over more. If I had hit the brakes, the line of cars behind us would been forced to brake and cause a pileup just as the first time.
He kept me mid-trailer the whole time (made sure with his wing mirrors), then he cut all the way left and turned. I had, other than the color scheme and how new the Semi Diesel was, no way of identify it. I'm afraid to file any claim as I don't want Snowball totaled and either have try a Avy for sale in the same awesome condition or buy it back on a salvage title.
Not even the police dash came caught anything useful and I'm dealing with TWO police jurisdiction. But, I was assured by BOTH jurisdiction the I would not have been ticketed due to the circumstances of the incident.

That's pretty minor damage looks like scrapes but no dents.
That's why I am a HUGE fan of Cladding!
There are pretty deep scrapes in my bumper and there is a clip problem on the passenger front side bumper. I don't know what structural damage may be there. I talked to my insurance and if my damage is $3,500, Snowball would be about 80% value according to Kelly Blue book.
All in all, I am lucky. My poor Snowball is still banged up. She still has the original 21+ paint on it and the interior is almost perfect.

Sometimes it's best to just forego the insurance route and just pay for the repairs yourself.

When searching for my interior door panel on Car-Part.com recently, I was reminded that there is still a ton of wrecked Avalanches out there with cladding for parts.

The mounting clips are available on Amazon.

The rest is just regular paint and body work.

Sometimes it may be best to avoid that whole "totaled" thing.

No one ever said you couldn't pay for your own repairs.

I'm learning a lot about insurance. My carrier has an awesome department to help weigh filing or not. I found out I have up to two years to filing a claim.
We were lucky enough find a replacement Cladding:)love:) local junk yard. Due to the color the scrapes aren't as visible as they are in direct sun or with dirt on it. I think we buffed out most of the scrapes but a few are rather deep.
I've had a similar type of accident where we thought it was just paint and a dented quarter panel. After they looked at it clips on the quarter panel were broke ( requiring new panel), new light assembly and paint new panel. It almost totaled it but was under amount for it.
Thank you EXT4ME for the recommendation for clips. Also, thank everyone for your concern and suggestions. I REALLY appreciate it.:yourock:

Congrats on finding a different ava! I know around here they started showing up all over (and in better condition) AFTER I bought the '02. I know if I ever get another one (doubtful) it would NOT be cladded, mine has little to no metal left under the cladding.

I had to look up meniers. I have severe tinnitus and have my entire life but no dizziness except from blood pressure on very rare occasions.

As for the lifter tick, I'm not well versed on the 8.1 but I have one myself (ETA: Just to clarify, I don't have a lifter tick, I have an 8.1). I think I'd try some Seafoam in the oil per instructions before an oil change and see if that doesn't loosen it up so it expands to take up the slack. There's other magical fluids too but I use Seafoam for a lot of different things. It's not a cure-all unfortunately.

Hank Slocum on FB takes old Industrial 8.8's and rebuilds them and sells them. They will bolt right in in place of the 8.1 and have a bunch more power. Heads flow better etc. I will probably get one from him and be done with it. Its pretty expensive but far cheaper than a Raylar engine that won't be any better. He seems to be well known in the 8.1 performance world. Going to try to get one from him and have a local shop put it in my truck and dyno tune it. The top Raylar ($15k) is about 700/700 hp/ftlbs Not sure I need that much power but Hank uses some of Raylars parts so we shall see how this goes.

He is in california so I would probably fly out, rent a truck to bring it back to Michigan or PA and have it installed and tuned at one of those two locations.
