Just another sqealing belt topic...

My belt only whines for the first few minutes after I crank it. I think once the engine warms up it quits -- is THAT the infamous noise or does it get worse ?? I'm just trying to decide if its necessary to replace now, or a minor annoyance.

Either tensioner or idler pulley. I replaced my alternator last fall, it went.

Since I know with past history about the tensioners and idler problems and my rig has 131k on it I am changing all while I have the belts off. Hell, just throwing money at a problem is fun if you have a little extra at the time. I just want that noise gone, period.

New information. Just noticed that there is a sticker on the a/c tensioner box saying to read GM Service Bulletin #03-01-38-019A before installation. If your a/c seems to be working fine then just replacing the tensioner is no big deal but if you are experiencing an a/c performance problem you will want to read this bulletin before continuing.

(y) Ok, just finished putting on the Goodyear Gatorback belts and both tensioners and the idler, started the engine and is quiet as a church mouse. I was so tired of that squeal noise!  :B:

And here's hoping it stays that way.

I changed my tensioner as well when I placed my Gates belt on and so far so good! I will be ordering me the Goodyear Gatorbacks once this one starts squealing again. Glad to hear its as quiet as a church mouse! ;)  (y)

FYI 2002blackedout2500 all 2500 had the issue including me, the Gaterback cured it. I hope the gates works for you.

:B: Last night after I closed the office I decided to take a trip over to Florence, at the coast, and have a nice seafood dinner and drive back. It is a beautiful little trip. Anyways, all remained quiet during the whole trip. Thanks guys for the info.  (y)

Thank you MS03 2500! So far the Gates belt has been okay...we'll see a few months down the road ;)

Hello,
I am new to the forum but have been hunting around and finding great info here. My 2002 2500 squeals like crazy. I am building an order for rock auto and looking to replace the belts with gatorbacks and all of the tensioners and idlers... but I am confused by by the multiple types of parts offered and want to make sure I get the write stuff. I have the 105 amp alternator. If anyone can outline exactly what I need to kill the squeal I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

Looks like the  GOODYEAR Part # 4060950 Gatorback belt is all you need. Buy the other stuff if you need it.

Also get the AC belt GOODYEAR Part # 4040398 GatorBack

Also you may want to clean the tensioner and pulleys to get the oils and other stuff off of them.

If you can afford it I would do the 2 tensioners and the idler when you do the gatorback belts.

x2! I switched out my tension pully and added the gatorback and had no squeals ever since.  :D

Thanks everyone!
Which tensioners and the idler do I need? So many options I just want the best quality so I only have to do it once! (hopefully)

You likely only have 2 tensioners. 1 is the a/c belt tensioner and that is the smaller belt. The other is the tensioner for the bigger belt that goes around the fan, power steering, lower pulley on the crank and the alternator. The longer belt also has an idler pulley that is not a tensioner but just is another pulley for the belt to go around so that it can be routed correctly. Get the A/C Delco parts from Rock Auto. Done and done.  (y)

Hey,
Thanks everyone for the input the parts came in a while back, but I am just finally installing everything today. So far everything is going smoothly I replaced both tensioners and the idler pulley. After some more cleaning I will pop my new gaterback belts on and let you all know how it goes.

Thanks again to everyone for there input!
Robert

Finished the install and not even a hint of a squeal. I can't believe it. My dad bought this truck new in 2002, and it didn't take long for the squealing to start. He had it back and forth from the dealership a million times until he finally gave up. If we heard the squeal coming up the drive way we knew who was coming. But no longer... it has 260,000 km on it now and I will report back with an update.

So far good info here, I just bought a 2008 1500 LT with a squeal I need to fix. Thanx for those part #s raiderron, that's exactly what I'm gonna do
