Clunking finally located

I had to finally swallow my pride and admit I could not find a clunking sound that I was positive it was coming from the front drivers wheel area. I fired the parts cannon and no change. It sounded like brakes hanging but saw no issues, but replaced the hose anyway, sway arm bushings and links, cv axle, wheel bearing hubs, bump stops, etc. Now, this truck is old and really the parts were not in the best condition anyway, so I'm not mad about it.

Took it to a shop I trust, and figured they'd tell me the frame was cracked or something. Called me half hour later and told me it was fixed. Turns out the parking brake shoes had come loose because the backing plate rotted off. I knew this, bought the parts to fix it a while ago, but got side tracked with the clunking. It really did not sound like it was coming from back there, weird. So they took that junk out of there, and the thing rides super smooth and quiet now. So the backing plates and parking brake job just got moved to the front of the line, at least when I feel like working on it again.

Little embarrassing, but at least I enjoy driving this thing again.

Glad you got it fixed, those sounds coming from under the truck are extremely hard to trace. BTW they make a 2 piece backing plates so its easier to replace them if you ever want to.

Thank you. I didn't mention my Avalanche is a 2500. The backing plates are different, and only come in one piece. Either way, job doesn't look terrible, just a little time consuming.

I have a '03 1500 and the clunking/rattling sound from drivers side rear area is driving me insane. I have been using the "turn up Metallica " really loud fix. but now that I see your post I am going to give my parking break a looksee

I also had a strange noise that I could not figure out, I figured sooner or later something would fall off, well after probing around with a screwdriver I hit my spring shackle and it went through it. I was so happy it did not break and I had a chance to replace it.

So I have/had the same issue. While the Av was in the shop for the cam transplant I asked them to see if they could track it down. Turned out the the torsion bars elongated the pockets that they slide into in the lower control arms enough to allow some play and that was the clunking. They also replaced the torsion bar bushings at the crossmember cause they were shot.

Theyre now replacing the rear main seal (slow leak) as well as the seals on the transfer case, dropping the trans pan and changing the fluid & filters as well. They had the truck anyway…have the tools, space, and know how…so I said Phuck it that’s a no brainer…
