Tire Pressure Monitor Description and Operation

The Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) System warns the driver when any one or all of the vehicles tire pressures have become significantly under inflated. The system uses the passenger door module (PDM), body control module (BCM), driver information center (DIC), instrument panel cluster (IPC), a radio frequency (RF) transmitting pressure sensor inside each wheel/tire assembly, and the serial data circuit to perform the system functions.

When the vehicle is stationary the sensors go into a stationary mode. In this mode the sensors sample tire pressure once every 20 seconds and transmit in stationary mode once every 60 . As vehicle speed increases, centrifugal force closes the sensors internal roll switches causing the sensors to go into drive mode. In this mode, the sensors sample tire pressure once every 30 seconds and transmits in drive mode once every 60 seconds. The PDM receives and translates the data contained in each sensor RF transmission into sensor presence, sensor mode and tire pressure. The sensors compare their current pressure sample with their last transmitted pressure and will transmit in re-measure mode whenever an 11 kPa (1.6 psi) change in tire pressure has occurred.

When the TPM system detects a significantly under inflated tire pressure, the CHECK TIRE PRESSURE message is displayed on the DIC and the low tire pressure indicator is displayed on the IPC. Both the message and indicator can be cleared by adjusting tire pressures to the recommended kPa/psi. Refer to Label - Vehicle Certification in General Information. The system does not display the individual tire pressures, or their location on the DIC, nor will it indicate to the driver which tire pressure is low. The sensors pressure range is 0-351 kPa (0-51 psi). The sensors pressure accuracy from -10 to +70?C (+14 to +158?F) is plus or minus 7 kPa (1 psi).

The PDM has the ability to detect malfunctions within the TPM System. Any malfunctions detected will cause the DIC to display the SERVICE TIRE MONITOR message.

TPM Learn Mode Description

The tire pressure monitor (TPM) system uses the passenger door module (PDM), body control module (BCM), exterior lamp switch, park brake switch, 4 radio frequency (RF) transmitting pressure sensors, and the serial data circuit to perform the TPM learn mode functions. The sensor learn procedure must be performed after the PDM is replaced, a sensor is replaced, or a tire rotation. Once the TPM learn mode has been enabled, each of the sensors unique identification (Id) codes can be learned into the PDM's memory. When a sensor's Id has been learned, the PDM sends a serial data message to the BCM to sound a horn chirp. This verifies the sensor has transmitted it's Id and the PDM has received and learned it. The PDM must learn the sensors Id codes in the proper sequence in order to determine sensor location. The first learned Id is assigned to left front, the second to right front, the third to right rear and fourth to left rear.

Sensor Function Using the Pressure Increase/Decrease method

Each sensor takes a pressure measurement sample once every 20 seconds while in stationary mode. If the tire pressure increases, or decreases by more than 11 kPa (1.6 psi) from the last pressure measurement, another measurement will occur immediately to verify the change in pressure. If a pressure change has indeed occurred, the sensor transmits re-measure mode transmission. When the PDM receives a re-measure mode transmission while in TPM learn mode, it will assign that sensor Id to the location on the vehicle relative to the order in which it was learned.

Sensor Functions using J-46079

Each sensor has an internal low frequency (LF) coil. When J-46079 is used in activate mode it produces an LF transmission that activates the sensor. The sensor responds to an LF activation by transmitting in learn mode. When the PDM receives a learn mode transmission while in TPM learn mode, it will assign that sensor's Id to the location on the vehicle relative to the order in which it was learned.

TPM Learn Mode Cancellation

The PDM will cancel the learn mode if more then 2 minutes have passed and no sensors have been learned, or if the PDM has been in learn mode for more than 5 minutes. If the learn mode is canceled before any sensor has been learned, the PDM will remember all current sensor Ids and their locations. As soon as the fist sensor Id code is learned, all other Ids are erased from the PDM's memory.

Important: Before proceeding with the steps below, ensure that no other sensor learn procedure is being performed simultaneously, or that tire pressures are not being adjusted on a TPM equipped vehicle within close proximity.

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Apply the parking brake.

Important: If the TPM learn mode cannot be enabled, ensure the TPM system is enabled in the PDM. Refer to Control Module Setup .

  3. Turn the exterior lamp switch from OFF to parking lamps 4 times within 4 seconds. A double horn chirp will sound and the low tire pressure indicator will begin to flash indicating the TPM learn mode has been enabled.

Caution: Over inflating tires may cause personal injury or damage to the tires and wheels. When increasing tire pressure do not exceed the maximum inflation pressure as noted on the tire sidewall.

Important: If a horn chirp does not sound after 35 seconds for any of the 4 sensors, turn the ignition OFF to exit the learn mode and repeat the procedure from step 1.

  4. Starting with the left front tire, hold the antenna of the J-46079 against the tire sidewall close to the wheel rim at the valve stem location then press and release the activate button and wait for a horn chirp, or increase/decrease the tire pressure for 8-10 seconds, or until a horn chirp sounds. The horn chirp may occur before the 8-10 second pressure increase/decrease time period has been reached, or up to 30 seconds after the 8-10 second pressure increase/decrease time period has been reached.
  5. After the horn chirp has sounded, proceed as in step 4 for the next 3 sensors in the following order:

        1. Right front
        2. Right rear
        3. Left rear

  6. After all sensors have been learned, exit the learn mode by turning OFF the ignition.
  7. After the learn mode has been exited, adjust all tire pressures to the recommended kPa/psi.

Service VME - 2004-2005 Chevrolet/GMC/Cadillac Full Size Utilities with Tire Pressure Monitoring Low Tire Pressure Light Illuminated on Instrument Cluster - keywords aftermarket DIC C0750 C0755 C0760 #PIT3501 - (Mar 17, 2005)

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in the PI.

SERVICE VME

Starting with the 2004 Model Year, 1500 Utilities are now equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPM).

The system consist of
? Four Sensors, one for each wheel
  ? Passenger Door Module (PDM)
? Instrument Panel Cluster or Driver Information Center Message

Each sensor sends a unique RF signal to the PDM to indicate the tire pressure. The PDM receives the signals and coverts them to pressure data. This data is sent to the Driver Information Center on the Class 2 network. If any tire is more that 25% below the vehicle's recommended tire pressure, the driver will receive notification to "Service Tire Monitor" either on the Instrument Panel Cluster or the Driver Information Center. This message will stay active until the correct diagnosis is performed and the system re-calibrated. This message cannot be disabled due to FMVSS 138. Aftermarket wheels installed without the sensors will activate the "Service Tire Monitor" warning and will stay on until the sensors are installed. Tire pressure sensor calibration is required or the system will not function correctly. This Tire Pressure Sensor Learn procedure is in SI Document # 1311203. A new tool for the automatic calibration procedure is being developed and you will be notified when it is available.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

From the May 2005 GM Techlink:

Tire Pressure Monitor

A Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system was added to certain GMC and Chevrolet full-size utility trucks for model year 2004 and continues for 2005. The same style system will be rolled out on additional vehicles in 2006. To help you understand this system, a Know-How video was prepared:

Course 10290.04D
Understanding TPM Systems for GM Trucks
March 2005 Emerging Issues

Here are some highlights. For details, refer to the video. A proper understanding of the system, its components, and its operation will help you properly diagnose operating conditions. You will learn to determine when parts replacement and reprogramming are or are not required to remedy the condition.

TPM System Components

The main TPM system components are:
- DIC
- Passenger Door Module (PDM)
- Instrument Panel Cluster
- 4 pressure sensors
- Serial data circuit

Tire Pressure Sensor Operation

The tire pressure sensors are incorporated into the valve stem of each road wheel. The pressure sensor transmits a radio frequency message which is received by a module in the vehicle.

When the vehicle is stationary, the sensor?s internal roll switch is open, which puts the sensor into stationary mode. The sensor samples tire pressure once every 30 seconds and transmits once every 60 minutes.

When the vehicle is moving, centrifugal force closes the sensor?s internal roll switch, which puts the sensor into drive mode. The sensor samples tire pressure every 20 seconds and transmits every 60 seconds.

Passenger Door Module (PDM) Operation

The PDM is the receiver in the full-size utility truck. The receiver module varies by vehicle platform. The PDM receives each sensor?s RF (radio frequency) transmission and translates the data into:
- sensor presence
- sensor mode
- tire pressure.

TIP: If the vehicle is equipped with RPO UK3, the PDM sends tire pressure and tire location data over the serial data circuit to the DIC, where they can be selected and displayed.

In addition to the display of tire pressures, the DIC in full-size utility trucks can also display two system messages -- ?Check Tire Pressure? and ?Check Tire Monitor?. Here are the important differences.

?Check Tire Pressure? message -- If a sensor detects a 1.6 psi (11 kPa) change in pressure, it transmits in re-measure mode. If the system detects a significant loss of tire pressure in any tire, the Check Tire Pressure message is displayed on the DIC and the low tire pressure indicator is illuminated on the IPC.

TIP: A ?Check Tire Pressure? message will not set system codes. This is normal operation of the system. The purpose of this message is to alert the driver to check and adjust tire pressure.

TIP: Both the message and indicator can be cleared by adjusting the tire pressure to the recommended pressure.

?Service Tire Monitor? message -- If the PDM detects a malfunction in the TPM system, it will cause the DIC to display the Service Tire Monitor message.

TIP: The ?Service Tire Monitor? message is not a normal system operation. DTCs should be set when this message is displayed.

Tire Pressure Sensor Relearn

DIAGNOSTIC TIPS:

- Try to determine from the customer which message has been displayed. This is especially important when you cannot find TPM system related DTCs stored.
- Always check and adjust the tire pressures COLD. As a rule of thumb, tire pressure will change one psi for every 10? F (6.9 kPa for every 5.6? C).
- Always use a known accurate tire pressure gauge.
- Always ?relearn? the system before replacing a suspect sensor.

Tech 2 Readouts

The Tech 2 can be used for Tire Pressure monitoring information and functions:
- Display tire sensor IDs
- Display tire sensor mode
- Display tire pressure
- Initiate the TPM Learn procedure
- Set up or change tire pressure placard value for the vehicle
- Set up a Passenger Door Module for TPM operation. A service PDM does not come ready for use with TPM. This function must be enabled when a replacement PDM is installed.

When to Perform a Tire Pressure Relearn

The tire pressure sensor relearn procedure must be performed after every PDM replacement, every sensor replacement, and every tire rotation. Once the TPM learn mode has been enabled, each of the sensors? unique ID codes can be learned into the PDM?s memory. There are two ways to excite the sensors and enter the learn mode.

Pressure Change Method -- This is performed by increasing or decreasing the air pressure in each tire by a specified amount, which forces the sensors to transmit in re-measure mode.

TIP: This method can be reviewed in SI and can also be viewed on the GM Common Training Website.

J-46079_TPM-tool.jpg

J-46079 TPM Diagnostic Tool Method -- Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF, and set the parking brake. Place the PDM in TPM learn mode by cycling the parking lamps ON and OFF 4 times within 4 seconds. The horn will chirp and the low tire pressure indicator will begin to flash. This indicates the learn mode has been enabled.

Proceed in this order: left front, right front, right rear, left rear. Starting with the left front tire, hold the antenna of the J-46079 against the tire sidewall close to the wheel rim at the valve stem, and momentarily press the activate button.

After the horn chirps, repeat the procedure for the other three wheels. After all of the sensors have been learned, exit the learn mode by turning the ignition OFF.

TIP: Before starting this procedure, ensure that no TPM equipped vehicle nearby is having its sensors relearned simultaneously, or its tire pressures adjusted. It is possible for the PDM to learn a stray learn or re-measure mode transmission from another vehicle?s sensors.

TIP: When a sensor is changed or relearned, the vehicle must be driven above 20 mph (32 km/h) for the DIC to update.

Sensor Color

In early 2005, sensor part numbers and colors were changed. The 2004 and some early 2005 trucks have a blue color sensor, and most 2005 trucks have a beige color sensor. If you find an early 2005 truck with blue sensors, it is not necessary to replace them with beige ones.

Tool Tip

Here?s a tip regarding your J-46079 TPM Diagnostic Tool (fig. 12).

When the internal battery is fresh (fully charged), the indicator is ?full,? or all dark. When the battery is depleted, the indicator shows ?empty,? or all light.

When the battery is low enough to show empty, the tool may perform some functions, but not others. For instance, it may perform the Simulate function, but not the Learn function. If you cannot get a vehicle to learn, don?t assume the sensors are bad. The tool may just need a fresh battery.

When dismounting and mounting tires, be careful when breaking the bead loose from the wheel rim.

TPM-Transponder-Rim-1.jpg

TPM-Transponder-Rim-2.jpg

If the tire machine's bead breaking fixture is positioned too close to the TPM sensor, or pressed down directly on top of it, it may contact the sensor as the tire bead breaks away from the wheel rim. This can damage the TPM sensor and require the sensor to be replaced.

Also be careful when transferring the tire bead to the other side of the wheel rim. As the tire machine rotates and the tire bead is stretched around the wheel rim, the bead can come in contact with the sensor. This can also cause sensor damage, requiring replacement. Damage can be avoided by correctly positioning the wheel and tire in relation to the mounting/dismounting head.

Tire Dismounting Tips

Refer to SI -- Tire Mounting and Dismounting section for more information.
- Place the sensor's cap and valve on a dry, clean surface after removal. The cap is aluminum and the valve is nickel-plated to prevent corrosion. Do not substitute a cap made of any other material.
- When separating the tire bead from the wheel, position the bead breaking fixture 90? from the valve stem.
- Position the mounting/dismounting head so the tire iron or pry bar can be inserted slightly clockwise of the sensor body when prying the tire bead up and over the mounting/dismounting head.
- Using the tire machine, rotate the tire/wheel assembly clockwise when transferring the tire bead to the outside of the wheel rim.

Tire Mounting

- Position the mounting/dismounting head 180? from the valve stem.
- Position the bead transition area 45? counterclockwise of the valve stem.
- Using the tire machine, rotate the tire/wheel assembly clockwise when transferring the tire bead to the inside of the wheel rim.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom described in the PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some inquires concerning a "Check Tire Pressure" message have been received after the wheels/tires have been swapped from another vehicle. The tire pressure sensors will learn to the vehicle and there will be no "Service Tire Monitor" message. It may be noticed when reviewing the TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) Data, with the Tech 2, that the tire pressures are incorrect. Example, all tire pressures may be set at 35 psi but the TPM data will display all the tire pressures at 18 psi. This could be caused by the wrong tire pressure sensors installed.

Recommendation/Instructions:

There was a change to the tire pressure sensors in 2005. Make sure the correct part number sensors are installed.

Passenger Door Functions Inoperative and/or Service Tire Pressure Monitor Message

When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.

Condition/Concern:

Owners may have a concern with all passenger door module functions and RKE inoperative. If the vehicle is equipped with the Tire Pressure Monitor System the Service Tire Pressure Monitor System Message will be displayed on the DIC. It may be noticed that the Tech 2 is unable to communicate with the Passenger Door Module (PDM). This could be caused by the PDM being logic locked.

Recommendation/Instructions:

To correct this concern, perform a refresh with the Tech 2. Currently, the Tech 2 software is not available for the 2004 model year. In the meantime, build the Tech 2 as a 2003 model year and perform a Refresh as per Bull 03-08-52-001C. After the PDM refresh is complete, all door functions will be restored and the Tech 2 will be able to communicate with the PDM. With communication restored, reprogram the PDM with the current calibration available in TIS2000.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.
