Hi folks I was just curious as to how involved and organized most people are in dealing with a local AV club chapter.
Your vote and comments are greatly appreciated.Thank you for your time on this matter! Grin

i say keep it informal.  we don't have enough AV's/ interested parties to be formal.  after you get the upper echelon of the chapter established you won't have much left for regular members.  in other words, a bunch of chiefs with no indians.

keep it informal.  if there is something going on, like a carshow perhaps, let us know.  anyone interesed will show up for fun and food at a local restaurant.

Check out the Connecticut Chapter area...

We are very active and usually get together at the Connecticut Monster Garage a couple of times per week. We get some new members that we have tagged and invite them to these informal gtg's so as not to scare them off with a BIG crowd.

Some members in our area are more active but we get some from NJ, NY, MA and RI at these weekly GTGs...

So far we are trying to set up monthly meetings at a dealership but then leaving and having different GTG activities each month. Informal but a little organization so we know what dates GTGs are comming up.
I hope it works for us Virginia folk. thumbs_up

We aren't as particular as your choices. Although I did make a choice, my family enjoys doing anything with the local clubs (I have the honor of being on the borderline between 2 clubs that often join together for GTGs). We are just as likely to go to a formally organized event as we are to go to a spur of the moment "I'm coming through" or a "Hey, we're going here and would anyone like to join?" (I am limited to 3 weekends a month, though, lol) We have met some wonderful people through our club. Even the kids have a wonderful time and are heartbroken when we think we'll have to miss something. I guess you could say we like a little organization, but we are game for almost anything.

I wish you luck in getting your local area going. If we were closer, we'd be there in a heartbeat.

As a Logistics Planner I like for things to be organized but when it comes t the AV a little of all.

If events cannot be put together fast enough I like to meet for a small drive or even a coffee.  When there is time I like to have restraints involved, meet in parking lots to check out everyone’s ride and maybe do some mods.  Car show GTGs are awesome.

The best GTGs are planned well in advance and have a set schedule with lost of activities.

Nice to have some excuse to get together each month.  Sometimes it is okay to just do lunch and parking lot conversation.  Once a quarter or so it is nice to do something a little more involved.  It doesn't need to have officers, prizes, etc.  It just needs to be an excuse to get together with the AVs, visit with some friends and sometimes see an interesting sight.

 --OldVMer

Totally agree with the above...

IMHO...

It should always be about the Av...

My charitable involvement/s are personal and not part of my Avalanche Owner Experience...Who, How and Where I give are no ones business...

It should always be non-profit orientated...

I don't need/want a Board of Directors dictating how and where monies come from or about the cost of operating a web site.  If you operate a local chapter it should be out of love for the Avalanche Experience.  If the expense of running a website is a drain or hardship, don't do it...many local chapters operate very well with no local website.  That IMHO is what this site is for anyhow...

It should ALWAYS BE FUN...

Having meetings about this and that (non Avalanche related) topics are a drain on my "fun meter"...

Many local clubs/chapters are very successful because their activities are Avalanche related; more mod parties than you can shake a stick at...
and/or...
GTGs based on interesting places to go to and an Avalanche carAVan to add the excitement of showing off the Avalanche...

Too many Activities can be as harmfull as too few...
I have a life other than the Avalanche...and I want and need the time to have that life also.  If you try to schedule my every free moment...I will quickly loose interest...I want to share with you...but not once a week.  Make me want to come...not feel bad for missing...

Have an agenda that I can plan for...

I love to attend Get Togethers...share and help others do mods to their Avs...show them off...admire your Avalanche...share in the Avalanche Owner Experience...

Plan something nice...in advance...make it include something about the Avalanche specifically and I'll be there...

In closing...there are a lot of folks who miss the mark...

There are a lot that are successful...SoCal & Arizona are examples of groups that pretty much have it right...while I don't agree with ALL of their foundational structure...they come closest to the standard by which others should measure up too...or strive for.

And to clarify I only mention those 2 clubs because I have personal experience with both.  There are a couple on the East Coast that seem to have their act together as well.

I agree with Cliff  pretty  much 100% on this one  even though he didnt mention the Norcal chapter he  belonged to in the past  ,  but I   do agree with him ,  they are both great and I alway enjoy a visit with their chapter.

Some organization is nice, monthly organized needings would be too much, quarterly though.....

We found for our local chapter this to be the case as well . Yes there should be a small group to help run the club but people need to remember this is a club NOT a business and once it crosses that line it is pretty hard getting back to being a group of people that love the trucks and enjoy everyones company

i say keep it informal. we don't have enough Av's/ interested parties to be formal. after you get the upper echelon of the chapter established you won't have much left for regular members. in other words, a bunch of chiefs with no Indians.

keep it informal. if there is something going on, like acarshow perhaps, let us know. anyone interested will show up for fun and food at a local restaurant.

I have heard this from a lot of members that Just want to enjoy the club and not worry about club officers , board of director , club by laws.   It is all just too much for most including I, it should be fun not like punching in the time clock for a days work in the mine . For the main of the club I think the way the club is setup right now is perfect !

We  have the Steering committee here , The cruise Coordinators on this site that run the local chapters. Not much more needed unless those chapters have websites and even then those run themselves so you only need 1  or 2 members for that.

Besides when it is  kept  informal more people are able to put input and things together.

I guess it really depends on if you want a  dictatorship  run chapter with people you will never  really  know  or a chapter of friends  and family doing things together and enjoying life and where the Avalanche can  take us !!!

My .02 I second the second !

In closing make it a club for  the family !!  There are clubs/other avalache sites that are out there that are WAY too  adult orientated , something that I have ALWAYS felt  that it should be kid friendly and  and be  about the trucks  not what  Paris Hilton  wore  last night.   There  are plenty of websites out there for that and the Avalanche  Community should not be dragged into it, a  good club should not need this  type of  content   /  things to  survive.

I believe what you are talking about here is website content and not how you want your local chapter to be managed.

Since many of the local chapters have their own websites for various reasons , the way their site displays to its members is the way a chapter is run.

This includes events , things what are dicussed wiehter it be in a parking lot at starbucks or on a fourm , pictures posted .  I personally would not want my local chapter to have adult rated events , display adult orientated pictures since most of the time when I attend an event I have my childern with me and if it was I would not be apart of a chapter or club like this since I dont do this just for myself , I do it with my wife and kids so that we can do something together with like minded people.

My kids love seeing Avalanches and the places people take them but if i have to worry about exposing them to something they really shouldnt be seeing at their age weither it be on a website or on a cruise , then I will keep away from that site/chapter/club - which keeps me away from that site/chapter/club as well.

I guess that is as clear as I can try to make it.

How do I want my local chapter ?  Make it so I that not only I am a member of that chapter but my family is as well.

Here comes the 'drama' from the 'leadership' of Norcal again.  Please start your own thread on how you need a hug because the same guy that you offended and quit your 'club' is the same guy who tagged you, supported the club financially, and initiated GTGs for the club, among many things.

Why even compare my AV site, which is not a local chapter to begin with?  You have to bring someone down with you when someone mentions or describes a structure that is similar to your club structure.   As far as I can see, the 'leadership' of Norcal has not changed.

Your true colors are coming out in response to ICHNGE's honest opinion, who also was a member of Norcal that was also banned from the Norcal site after he quit.  Hmmm, what did it say below our avatars, 'This member is banned'.   What does that say about the site?  Why would you ban your top posters who supported you the most.  Just because we had opinions that were different from yours?  Please. . .

As far as our website content is concerned, it's really none of your business is it.  Do you own the internet?  Last time I check you didn't.  Members are given a choice to see what they want, it's called freedom of choice.

Plus, were aren't accountable to anyone.  We don't have site sponsors or GM sponsorship and my wife doesn't work for a Chevy Dealer.  Your site has to be the way it is so don't compare.

Lastly, I'm not sure why the 'leadership' of Norcal sent me an email asking to be a member of my site and another signed up as someone they were not.  The content must be good enough for them to be curious about it.

I would stick to the thread topic if you can and don't compare apples to oranges.  Re-read ICHNGE's response about what makes a good local chapter.  It's lessons learned.

I do appreciate the recent feedback on this topic of local chapters!

It is interesting to see such passion and emotion from members. The problem I have in Virginia is the lack of passion! chevy (not mine personally  love )
I set up a buddy list of about 35 -40 Virginia members and send out multiple PMs as well as public threads asking for ideas and encourage the Virginia members to talk up the events to create enthusiasm. Out of that many I get maybe 7 or 8 replies and maybe 5 or 6 show up to the meetings or GTGs.Sometimes no one shows up.
I remind them that it's not a one person operation and the local will only be as fun or active as they choose it to be. Based on results they do not want a very active local. Sad
I will gladly support anyone with their efforts to set up meetings or GTGs but I have other family issues to deal with and will not be the organizer for a group that by results does not wish to be organized. I do care about the people I have met in person or on line and wish them well and would like to see them again or meet them for the first time.

Vaeagleav - Just stick with it , I have had the same happen to me where I coordinate an event and no one shows up , other times 10-15 show up. I agree sometimes it is alot more fun to attend a event while you dont have to worry about time tables or discounts , what ever the case.  Soon you will get a core group of members and your get together will get larger and larger. All of the chapters start somewhere they just need people like you to keep the light on and keep it going. I am sure you are doing a great job , keep it up.

To respond to the drama -
You know Ro , first of all review my post , did i mention your site ? No , I didnt mention your site . In fact I know of at least 2 that allow such content. I support only one club which is this club. I do not post or view av owner , clubav or avstyle or anyother site , only this club and the chapters of it.   Please Enjoy what you are doing , not losing any sleep over it here. And if you notice I didnt attack Cliff , I said he was 100 % RIght on the money with his comments !!!  I added the top paragraph to further the point that this is how the membership of Norcal are trying to run it , like the Socal and AzClubI dont have any problems with Cliff , the past is the past and I wont let things in the past interfer with the future and any event that he attends or chapter he is involed with can only be better with his presence , I know ours was while he was with us !

2nd - I dont need a hug for you or any other member that has left , you may of tagged us for the club but we were the ones that started the chapter and with the help of the members it has grown and become more than just trucks , it has become a family of great Avalanche owning friends.

3rd - We signed up for your site after hearing from other members about a new avalanche site that you were advertising for on our chapter forum via PMs. This was BEFORE you required people to be submit to the 21 and over content.  Have we tried after that ? NOPE , I am interested in the trucks , not adult matterial. Besides you turned both of our memberships down as " Your membership here would be a conflict of intersts " esentialy banning us and other Norcal members from your site after you left the norcal chapters.

4th - Members Banned - The norcal Chapter has only banned 4 people since we have been orginized starting on 3 years now.

One asked to be removed and was banned after we were told about a distrubing comment placed in their profile. This happened almost a year ago and said member has been asked to rejoin us.

One was removed after 3 complaints were made from female members about harassing/stalking type behavior . We asked how they would like to see this distrubing things resolved and all parties agreed to have the member removed from the chapter. We could not let something like this go and the membership was notifed of the action taken place and all parties involed were not mentioned by name to protect their privacy.

3rd was removed after members were tired of getting PMs from that member creating drama and unrest that was not nessary.

4th was removed after being an unsafe driver in a parking lot during and event , which was a probation and the ban was lifted.

Now I am not going to name any names because to be honest after these people left the chapter has been pretty much drama free and has just helped the club become closer.

As far as our website content is concerned, it's really none of your business is it. Do you own the internet? Last time I check you didn't. Members are given a choice to see what they want, it's called freedom of choice.

Did I claim to own the internet ? Dont think my name is Al gore but hey your story. I simply stated my viewing choices of the internet. Oh and since you brought up Freedoms , how about speech ?  Someone posted how I would like to see a chapter run and  I posted my comments ! That I like to see family orientated chapters of the trucks we own. Then I get attacked by you , the funny thing is I really dont care what your views are , ESPEICALY on how our chapter is run. You had a chance and you offered tons of input on how to help make this one better but when you were asked for your leadership at the meeting and another member nominated you to take charge , you refused and walked away instead and started your own club. More power to ya !

Nuff said on this end - enjoy your night.

Rolando and Steve.

Get a life. Both of you. grow up already. This is a truck club. If you (or anyone) has an issue with someone else. handle it like an adult. either take the high road and ignore, or call on the phone/e-mail and deal with each other.....

Regarding the local sites. I personnaly need some sort of planning just to be involved. Due to my work schedule. so, that is where I want some calander events. But the impromtu GTG is great.... I just might have to show up in the city vehicle..... lights, star and all....

OK, back to topic.

2 things:  I like the way the guys and girls here in GA handle things.  They let us know about GTGs and if we can make it we do, I haven't made one yet, but it seems that they do a nice mixture of things.  Nothing overly formal, just more of a "hey we are planning to do this, who's going to make it?"  Seems to be really fun and on occasion, they put together a larger GTG that needs and gets more detailed attention.

Second -- Loggie, I'm curious...

What kind of restraints?? Just kidding

As I am still pretty new here. I would be up for most anything the problem I have is my schedule can change on a dime. We don't really have any organization locally so if I take it upon myself to plan something I am afraid that it could fall apart if I can't make it to my own planed event.

I like the way the North East Florida guys do it. They plan a monthly resturant to meet at and hang out for a while. Then afterwards they go to someones house and work on anybody's AV that have MODS to do. I have only made it to one of their GTG and they were all real cool. I am going to try to make it to more as my schedule and distance ( i live in Palm Coast) we let me. Next time I am bringing some mods, too. Cheesy  I am also just as close to the Central Florida guys so I may check them out sometime, too. Jax is just my home town..

Right on Spike!..maybe we talk that over on Saturday and see if we can come up with an idea! I like a little organization myself, just so everybody's on the same page. Doesn't have to be a full fledged governing body or anything. Just communication between members of a local chapter so everybody knows where the g2g's are and when. Sharing information is so important, and this club and they way everybody shares new ideas is great. I've only been a member since August, but I already love this club and look forward to lots of great new ideas and meeting new people who share my interest in the AV.

Yea man sounds good. Exactly what I was thinking. I would deffinetly like to talk it over and see what we can come up with. Even if we just start out with lunch or dinner GTG's and through in a mod or activity GTG here and there.

How do I want the local chapter?  FRIENDLY!!!  FUN!!! INFORMATIVE!!! HELPFUL!!! I wouldn't even mind a monthly or bi-monthly lunch or dinner maybe on a Saturday.  How 'bout it Viper?  I know you've done several things and I haven't been able to attend, but  I would if I could plan some other things around it.  Oh, and thanks for your work so far, one day I'm going to partake of the fruit of your labor!

I would like a chapter that gets together about once a month, depending on weather. Goes to different places for GTG's. Most of all is just enjoy everyone's company and remember we are all here because of the Chevy Avalanche. This should always be first in mind. I like to have a planned date I think it makes it easier for organizing. It allows members time to adjust their schedules to be able to attend. I also would not mind having impromptu GTG's at a local Denny's or something. In the winter have a GTG and go sledding and snow mobiling.

Just have fun showing off the greatest truck ever built and enjoying the company of owners of these trucks. Learn new modding ideas from each other and even get together to help install some of those mods. Just basically a big extended family.

Just my idea.

We don't really have a local chapter in Michigan "per se", we are limited by weather to just do a parking lot type GTG. Cold weather or snow isn't a problem, it's cold rain & cold wind we avoid.

Charity events should be planned in advance, maybe make donations discreet ? It's OK by me to announce you made a donation if the intention is to get others to donate, (if they can afford to). I for one certainly do not donate to every cause I am asked, I'd be penniless  Roll Eyes

I'd like to keep it loose since we are all too scattered about the state for regular GTGs. Sirshopolot is SW and I'm a bit north but still SE so we are opposite sides of the largest population center of our state. I'd like more local members to suggest or organize a GTG. I'd assist and attend if possible.

LOOSE !  I'd like to think the structure is in place should we decide to employ it. I don't want to discourage anyone from joining in a GTG or event, if "pass the hat" works best so-be-it. (sorta like it costs nothing to join CAFCNA but reel them in)

I agree Flint4X4,

For those diehard type members or in areas where there is lots of participation there are frequent events.
My interst back in April of 2005 when I started this was to try and see what the members in general liked about the GTGs and what did they want different. I thought it may help increase attendance if we could find what interested people.
So far I have not found the magic setup to attract the locals in Virginia. I have sent PMs, tried monthly meetings (No officers or dues etc.) loose GTGs in a parking lot, carshows, Toy Runs, dinner events etc with only a small core group showing up even with advance notice and reminders.

Vaeagleav,

Michigan is in flux, a significant increase in both members and participation, I can't take credit for either. Newer members willing to play are causing other members to get off the couch near as I can figure. Works for me.

I just would like to see more members.  In order for me to go to one of the nearest GTGs I need to travel 2-3 hours in any given direction.  So the sporadic GTG or lunch GTGs are really hard to get to.  I would still like to attend the planned GTG's around me and I know I'm asking allot for people to come all the way to Cleveland/Chattanooga for a GTG.  I'm planning a GTG for a local car show and I hope I can get some AV's to show up to spark some interest with all the AVs I see around here.

I am planning on traveling to other GTG's, but if someone would like to donate a GPS system to my, I Don't know how to follow directions cause, that would be wonderful . Big laughter with tears

We discussed this topic at the Blue Knights Toy Run and it's still a problem to get the majority of local AV owners to attend GTGs.
We had our largest turnout ever in the past 3 years and it was 12 Avs and half of them were from NC. Glad they showed up as well as MD. too.

my input may be of little worth but here it is. I went to the 2008 Laughlin gtg and had a great time for the most part. There were a few little glitches but nothing to write home about lol. I saw some room for improvement in a certain area and I think others agreed so I bet it is handled. As for me what I loved and would love to see a bit more of is just the run it's self. There was nothing more breath taking then a line of loved and well cared for Av's running in a group like we did going to Lake Havasu. Avalanche pride is something to behold ! It would be great to see this type of event at least every 3 months for just a scheduled run and of more then 20 miles or so I am talking about 100 miles one way lol. Massive line of awesome trucks do lunch and head back together.

Still and issue in Virginia and I have seen other states have trouble finding cruise coordinators and have GTG attendance too. I know the gas prices and the economy don't help with long distance GTG.

Big laughter with tears Big laughter with tears When I posted that gas was not that high  Big laughter with tears
Still like to see more runs then just sitting at the burger shack but then that is fun too. I think we could at least have a meet up spot and cruise a few miles getting there AND a few miles back. I feel that a line of trucks gets attention rather then traveling alone meeting up and then leaving alone. I think it would get more involved and maybe do a club meeting over lunch and then turn to fun and talk also plan a cruise once every three months due to gas prices.

My "Local" chapter of 1 needs to have a Tagging Drive.  I 've handed out more than 50 tags last year and not one bite.  Kind of disappointing.....  I mean shesh, doesn't anyone else around me love this truck as much as I do?   I need a hug

We just GTG whenever the urge strikes.

Sunday, AFC and NFC championship GTG. Invites went out today.

 Super Bowl party, same deal.

 It works well for us.

You might find something under your state section, postings near you etc. Otherwise you may have to be the one to try organizing a local chapter by tagging AVs you see and making posts in your state area with suggestions.....any way good luck with getting things going!

Valid points, Michigan was idle when I found the club ten years ago. I messaged MI members and posted a lot, greeted any new member promptly, gave up on trying to organize a GTG but gave it another shot. I've never got one person to join by tagging or talking to them but others have.

I didn't ever intend to shape MI, I just wanted to have fun and meet new people. It was frustrating but once we got the ball rolling it shaped itself. I may have rolled the first snowball but all the credit since belongs to our club members.

I think I left a mark, we don't have a real structure or leader.  Big laughter with tears
