I recently got this ?02 with 85K and I didn?t notice any noises until after I did a rear brake job with new pads and rotors.? There is a clunk-clunk noise in the back when applying the brakes that varies with road speed but most noticeable at low speeds. I put the rear up on jack stands, pulled the wheels and reattached the lug nuts to try and isolate the noise. With the engine cold so it would have a high idle I put it in drive and wedged a stick between the brake pedal and the seat to lightly apply the brakes at around 10 mph. I then went back to the brakes and noticed that the right one was making the clunk noise twice every revolution, plus, with a hand on the caliper I could also feel it as well. The left one had none of this. Then with the engine off I checked for any looseness. The main thing I found was that the right axle shaft had about .018 inches in and out free play while the left one had none. Also, when pulling the axle in and out, it makes a similar clunk as when braking. Is this rear axle free play normal? I would think not if the other side doesn?t have any and makes no noise. What should I check next? Since the brakes are new I think I can rule that out. I don?t have experience with axle repairs but? would get the service manual and fix it myself if I have to.? I do have a factory manual for ?94 Chevy full size trucks. Are the basic principles involved much different so I can get an idea of what I?m in for?
