All members who were registered by July 22, 2002 had their t-shirt orders placed today. The t-shirts are being sent to the Chevy Avalanche Fan Club and will be sent with your travel information kit, which will arrive roughly 10 to 14 days before Wild West 2002.

If you want to buy more t-shirts for your family members don?t despair! A special store has been setup just for you with special Wild West 2002 gear. You can click on the link below for more information:

http://www.cafeshops.com/cp/store.aspx?s=wildwest2002

If you want extra t-shirts or clothing for the cruise it is strongly recommended you place your order by August 1, 2002 to assure timely delivery.

As a registered attendee and to aid in activity and meal planning we also need you to fill out an online questionnaire as soon as possible. It will take from 5 to 10 minutes to complete but will greatly enhance our ability to plan for the event. You can find the form at:

[see your e-mail]

Please complete this form by Friday, July 26, 2002 (the ordering of certain materials is dependent upon your timely completion of this form).

CAMPGROUND/HOTEL ACCOMODATIONS:

Mazama Motor Village and the Crater Lake Lodge are both booked for Thursday and Friday night. The Mazama Village Campground is first come first served, and a Thursday afternoon arrival is strongly recommended to get the best campsites.

There are still eight rooms available at the group rate at the Super8 Hotel in Yreka, California for Saturday, August 24, 2002. You can call (530) 842-5781 to book your room and be sure to mention the CAFCNA discount code. The block of rooms expires on July 31, 2002.

There is also still space available at the KOA in Eureka, California. However, because the KOA would not give us a favorable group rate I?m exploring other avenues and accommodations. Tent campers will have the best opportunities north of Eureka. Those with travel trailers will probably be best off at the KOA. Those wanting to stay in a cabin or a hotel will find room rates close to the KOA cabin rate in and about Eureka. You will also be receiving a hotel guide in your package so if you want to make a last minute reservation, that will be an option.

THINGS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER PURCHASING:

To assure a fun and safe trip you should consider purchasing the following items over the next four weeks:

* An FRS radio. These radios are the 21st century version of the walkie-talkie and can be purchased at any department store, electronics store, Radio Shack, or even Costco, Sam?s Club, BJ Wholesale, or Shopko. Radios start as low as $19.95, although you should get a model that allows channel scrambling (giving you more frequencies). Having an FRS radio will allow you to stay in communication with other Avalanches while we are driving.

* Knee pads. You can get these at Home Depot, Lowe?s, and major department stores. If you want to get knee pads specific for caving (not required) you can go to REI or EMS or if you live in an area that offers recreational rock climbing and caving, a specialty store. These aren?t ?required? but will make your time at Lava Beds National Monument more enjoyable. You can purchase a hard hat, also recommended for a nominal fee at the Visitor Center.

* Leather work gloves. You can also get these at Home Depot, Lowe?s, and major department stores. Nothing elaborate or expensive is required. Cave floors are damp and dirty and gloves will help keep your hands warm and clean, while protecting the features of the cave.

* Three sources of light for each person going caving. This is following caving safety and protocol. Although none of the caves we will be exploring will require prior caving experience it?s best to follow the rules from the beginning. Your three light sources should be a flashlight (which can be provided to you at the Visitor Center for free), a Cyalume light stick (get a short duration extra bright stick), and a survival candle with a package of waterproof matches.

CLIMATE:

Crater Lake National Park: Temperatures typically run in the high 70?s to low 80?s during the day and the high 40?s during the night. The weather is typically sunny during this time of the year with showers or thunderstorms possible in the evening hours.

Lava Beds National Monument: Temperatures typically run in the high 80?s to mid 90?s during the day and the mid 50?s during the night. The region has been going through a severe drought that softened this past winter. Rain is unlikely during our visit.

Redwood National Park: Temperatures typically run in the high 50?s to mid 60?s during the day and the high 40?s during the night. The lush region borderlines on being a temperate rain forest, but experiences dry weather in September and October. Morning fog and drizzle is possible but typically gives way to sunny skies by the afternoon.

* Friday ? lunch at Crater Lake National Park
* Monday ? lunch at Redwood National Park
